Kempston Musical Society was formed in 1905 and, apart from the war years, has performed continuously ever since. The present Musical Director, Janet Welsh, has been our
conductor for over 40 years and has brought the choir to its present high standard.
The Society averages about 75 members and attracts much support and interest through the enthusiasm of its Musical Director, who makes singing with KMS both pleasurable and
The repertoire is extremely varied, ranging from secular, (including excerpts from musicals, spirituals and folk songs,) to carols, sacred works and classical choral works. Most of the
concerts performed are for the benefit of various local and national charities, with many thousands of pounds having been raised. We also like to encourage young local instrumentalists who feature as soloists at our charity concerts.
KMS provides a perfect environment for those who wish to join a strong and accomplished amateur choir that enables a large repertoire of choral music to be performed both locally and to a wider audience.
The Choir has performed in Reims and Troyes in France, receiving a standing ovation in Reims Cathedral. It has also performed in many towns in England, as guests of churches in
those areas, and these day trips also provide a social climate in which members can relax in each other's company and also enjoy their hobby of making music.
